A 14th Century knight, Antonius Block, and his squire wearily return from the crusades to find the Black Death sweeping through the land. Death appears to the knight and informs him his time is up. The knight, reluctant to die, challenges Death to a game of chess for his life. The game continues during the knightʼs journey. As Block witnesses the suffering around him he questions Death about the existence of God. Ingmar Bergmanʼs allegorical and seminal classic won the special Jury Prize at Cannes in 1957 and remains a captivating, stimulating, visual feast today. In Swedish with English subtitles.
