A topical film for the start of the season. Tanya, a young single mother, leaves her native Russia, with her young son Artion, to meet her British fiancé at London’s Stansted Airport. When he does not appear, Tanya, frightened she will be returned to Russia, requests political asylum. To her surprise she finds herself trapped in the virtual prison of the holding camp in a desolate south coast resort. There begins her struggle to forge a future for herself and her son. Pawlikowski won a Bafta for Most Promising Newcomer in British Film.
