Ken Loach’s uncompromising adaptation of Paul Laverty‘s story of the struggle for Irish independence in 1920. Damien is a promising doctor but is troubled by the brutality of the Black and Tans and his deep love and sense of duty to his country. He decides to abandon his career to join his brother Teddy as workers unite across the country to form volunteer guerrilla armies to resist the British. There he enters a dangerous and violent fight for freedom that will test loyalties and family ties. The film won the Palm d’Or at Cannes 2006.
