Robert Redford plays an experienced solo yachtsman facing an ordeal in an increasingly desperate situation. He begins the drama asleep in his 39-foot craft when he is awoken to find that a huge metal container unit has fallen from one of the massive ships in a nearby shipping lane. Through a cruel twist of fate, the drifting container has made contact with the hull of his fragile boat and has
punched a small hole above the waterline. Hardly a word is spoken by Redford, the only actor in the film, as he faces the unfolding events. For all the film’s austerity and silence however, it is absorbing, gripping, bold and thoughtful.
