Winner of the Oscar for best ‘Foreign Language Film’. Set in Prague in 1988, Louka is a cellist out of favour with the Russian authorities who must scrape a living playing at funerals and repairing gravestones. He agrees to a marriage of convenience to allow a Russian girl to remain in the country. But she soon leaves him abandoning her 5 year-old son Kolya and he is left with the child.
