Mike Deerfield returns home from a tour of duty in Iraq and disappears. His father, Hank (Tommy Lee Jones), a retired military policeman from the Vietnam era, sets out to find him. He finds help from detective Emily Saunders (Charlize Theron), but the pair face army indifference and obstruction. As they proceed they discover conspiracy and cover-ups and come to realise the effect that the toll of the Iraq conflict has on the lives of young soldiers. Oscar winning scriptwriter Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) directs his own screenplay based on a true story by Mark Boal.
