Tom Hardy plays Ivan Locke, a married construction engineer, who leaves the site of a massive project and drives from Birmingham to Croydon. He spends most of the trip talking on his hands-free telephone and, whilst we hear both ends of each call, no other actor appears on screen. As Ivan’s car heads south along the M6, the surreal backdrop of motorway imagery draws us into the unfolding drama. Ivan keeps his emotions at a low simmer but in the shine of his eyes and his pained facial expressions, it is clear to see the conflict of professional and personal interests taking its considerable toll on the central character in this compelling thriller.
