Barbara Covet (Dame Judi Dench) is a veteran school teacher. She lives a lonely existence with only her ageing cat, Portia, for company. To stave off her Isolation she writes journal in which she acerbically and cynically observes those around her. When young and attractive Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) joins the teaching staff, Barbara has at last found a friend. However Sheba’s family threaten Barbara’s need for company. When Barbara witnesses Sheba’s dark secret, there begins a series of events that will irrevocably and dramatically change both women’s lives.
