The first American film rendition of Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” based on the Salem witch trials. Set in the Year 1692 a group of New England girls are caught performing a sinful dance in the woods. They claim they were possessed by the Devil and in turn trap the village in a web of accusations and fear. The noble spirited John Proctor (Daniel Day Lewis) who, having rejected the advances of one of the girls, Abigail Williams (Winona Ryder), finds himself accused of witchcraft and is on trial.
