A love story with a sense of Romeo and Juliet from contemporary West Africa. An army commander’s daughter falls for fellow university student and the descendant of one of Mali’s early chiefs. Both families object to the union and the couples increasing involvement in student strikes against the corrupt government. Finye is a sympathetic portrait of a society in transition. Cissé casts a critical eye on both modern and ancient values in a culture which is both exotic and surprisingly familiar.
