A bizarre surrealist odyssey whose magic ingredient is comedy, Holy Motors is preposterous and filled with secrets. Apparently inspired by the director’s fascination with the after hours life of stretch limousines, the film is centred around Monsieur Oscar who, over the course of a single day, takes on ten other guises ranging from a gangster and ageing millionaire to a troubled parent and an anarchic tramp. Oscar is accompanied only by Céline, the slender blonde woman behind the wheel of the vast engine that transports him through and around Paris. With impressive cameos by Eva Mendes and Kylie Minogue, Holy Motors is the rarest of things — a true original.
