AS the picturesque town of Mauthausen in Austria goes about its daily life, coaches containing tourists and children arrive to a place just 2 kilometres away. Here, thousands of people from over thirty nations were tortured and murdered, for this is the site of a former KZ, a Nazi concentration camp. Director Rex Bloomstein abandons the conventional documentary tools to revisit a frequently explored subject from a unique perspective. The story, told through the words of the town’s folk, camp visitors and tour guides, delivers a startlingly powerful picture of the camp and town both past and present.
