‘M’ arrives in Helsinki looking for work, where he is set upon by thugs and left for dead. He recovers but with no memory of his past. With nothing to support him, he begins to rebuild his life. He wanders the street where he meets the quirky townsfolk including a lovely Salvation Army officer and a dog named Hannibal. But inevitably his past catches up with him and he must face his future. A delirious mixture of black comedy, film noir and love story, Kaurismaki’s film took three major prizes at the Cannes Film Festival 2002.
